Nilgiris District
Nilgiris is one of the administrative districts of Tamil Nadu; with the meaning Blue Mountains (Neelam means Blue and Giri means hills or mountains). It is believed to have got the name because of the Kurinji flowers that bloom once in every twelve years. Nevertheless, there is no supporting evidence behind the same.
Nilgiris is bordered in the North by Karnataka, in the West by Coimbatore District and Erode District, in the South by Coimbatore District and Kerala State in the East.
Nilgiris is one of the least populous districts of Tamil Nadu according to the census of 2011. The pleasant weather condition of the district is the drawing card as the tourists throng this place throughout the year. There are many tribal populations living in and around the mountain, and therefore, they speak languages like Badaga, Kota and Tada. The other languages spoken in this district includes Kannada and Malayalam since it is in the border of Karnataka and Kerala respectively.
The Agriculture followed in this district is mainly Horticulture, due to the climatic conditions. The economy of this district is contingent upon the same.
