Tamil Nadu Administration
The Government of
Tamil Nadu, having its administrative central office at Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the core of the state governance. In Chennai, the administrative units are housed at the historic Fort St George building complex.
Edappadi K. Palaniswami took oath as Tamil Nadu’s 29th Chief Minister on 17th February 2017.
Tamil Nadu featured a two-chambered legislative assembly until the year 1986. Subsequently, it was substituted with a unicameral legislative assembly, succeeding the other states across the country.
Structure of the Tamil Nadu Constitution
Like the other state administrations across the country, the Governor is the constitutional head of Tamil Nadu while the Chief Minister is the head of the government and leads the council of ministers. The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court is the head of the judiciary.
Tamil Nadu comprises 40 Lok Sabha constituencies and 234 Legislative Assembly constituencies. Furthermore, the state is carved up into 32 districts, which are further divided into revenue divisions, taluks, firkas, revenue villages, municipal corporations, municipalities, panchayat unions, town panchayats and village panchayats for the purpose of extended administration.
Adoption of New-Age Administration Model
Tamil Nadu has been a pioneering state of E-Governance initiatives in India. The state has adopted the new-age governing model of e-Governance in various departments. Some of the sectors where e-Governance is now in practice are revenue, legislature, judiciary, or administration for improving internal efficiency in public services.
Present Government & Administrators of Tamil Nadu
- His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu Shri Banwarilal Purohit is the constitutional head of the state.
- Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru Edappadi K. Palaniswami the head of the elected Government and heads the Council of Ministers.
- Hon’ble Justice Indira Banerjee is the Chief Justice of Madras High Court
- Thiru Girija Vaidyanathan, is the Chief Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu took dynamic participation in the pre-independence politics of the nation. The budding desire for independence was spreading throughout the country, and it impacted in Tamil Nadu bringing forth numerous volunteers to the fight against the British colonial power in the fight for independenc. Notable among these are Tiruppur Kumaran, Aurobindo Ghosh (Pondicherry), Mahakavi Bharathiyar, Subramanya Siva, V.V.V Aiyar, and V.O. Chidambaram Pillai. Finally, India got her freedom in 1947, and Tamil Nadu got the separate status of a state in the Indian Union.
Emergence of Dravidian Parties
The political scenario of Tamil Nadu was dominated by the Congress Party after 1947, which gave way to the Dravidian populist mobilization in the 1960s. Since 1967, the regional political parties took active participation in the state politics. In 1967, DMK won the state election. DMK split into two in 1971, with MGR forming the splinter All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Since then these two parties have dominated the politics of Tamil Nadu. AIADMK, under MGR retained control of the State Government over three consecutive assembly elections in 1977, 1980 and 1984. After MGR's death, AIADMK was split over the succession between various contenders. Eventually, J. Jayalalithaa took over the leadership of AIADMK. Since 1967, the state has been under the rule of either Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) or All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). In 2006, assembly election, DMK led alliance comprising the Congress, the PMK and the Left Front, came to the power.
Present Political ScenarioIn the 2011 assembly election, AIADMK party, continuing its alliance with the Left Front and also with new allies like Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), stormed back to power, winning 202 seats. The seat tallies were AIADMK alone winning 150. Jayalalithaa was sworn in as Chief Minister for the 3rd time.
Rise of Caste-based Political Parties
It is important to consider that since the year 1990, caste-based political parties are on the rise in the state and gaining minor electoral success tardily splitting the vote banks of the major political parties like DMK and AIADMK.
This is a general overview of the political scenario of the state and how Tamil Nadu is marching towards as a developed and prosperous state in the nation offering stable and well administration to the public.
